The New Zealand Aria is one of Australasia’s most prestigious singing competitions and, in 2026, proudly celebrates its 80th year. Established in 1946, this year’s festival marks the 79th New Zealand Aria competition, making it the largest competition of its kind in New Zealand. Over eight decades, it has earned an outstanding reputation throughout Australasia’s opera community.

Each year the competition attracts an exceptional calibre of singers, adjudicators and musicians from across New Zealand and Australia. Many past winners and competitors have gone on to successful professional careers both here and overseas.

The festival begins with the senior vocal classes, where singers perform an exciting programme of repertoire spanning many languages, musical styles and eras. The Auckland Philharmonia once again joins us for the spectacular New Zealand Aria Final on Saturday evening at the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre, where audiences are treated to a dazzling showcase of operatic favourites performed with full orchestra.

The Festival Weekend of Song also features Music Theatre, Māori Waiata, Oratorio and Sacred Music, along with junior vocal classes that nurture the next generation of performers. A new Under 21 Recital class provides another exciting opportunity for emerging young singers to showcase their artistry.

Beyond the competition itself, the New Zealand Aria is renowned for its warm hospitality, strong sense of whanaungatanga and supportive atmosphere. The opportunity to perform alongside the Auckland Philharmonia, compete for significant prize money, and connect with fellow singers, teachers and audiences makes this a truly special event for competitors and music lovers alike.

Whether you are performing or attending as an audience member, we invite you to join us in Rotorua for an unforgettable celebration of singing, artistry and excellence.

The New Zealand Aria Trust welcomes you to the 79th Festival Weekend of Song to be held at Sir Howard Morrison Centre on Saturday 7th November 2026 at Rotorua Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre
